Firle’s batting dominated until an inspired, record-breaking spell of bowling by Bryden (recording the first ever 7-wicket haul by an Alts’ player) carved through their middle order. Unfortunately, despite Bryden’s heroics, Firle managed a sizeable total of 220.

The Alternatives’ batting failed to fire on this occasion. A relative thrashing ensued in the season’s low-point as the innings finished all out for 94. Only Chappell (23) provided any resistance against the onslaught.

On a more positive note, the game did mark the debut appearance of Richard Nutbean’s thermos flask. Fielding at mid-on, the flask showed surprising mobility and athleticism that contrasted with some other members of the squad. (However, Chappell was probably right in that it was unfair to compare, as the flask was both young and in its prime).
