The match was changed to a 20/20 format due to England’s glorious run in the World Cup. The quarter final versus Sweden turned out to be the main event of the day.

Green was the captain for the day with Boden unable to attend the first half of the match due to over-running dental work in the Worthing area.

Alts batted first, with Green setting a captains example and plundering 4 fours from the first over and getting Alts off to a flying start. He soon reached the 25 run retirement number.

ENG V IND 79 BOTHAM

Bell entered the fray and continued the attack scoring freely and stylishly. He too soon reached the retirement number.

Alts continued to add to the tally but at a more conservative rate, Stenner adding valuable runs. As the innings drew to its conclusion Green re-entered the fray and with Partridge skilfully engineering the strike with canny singles enabling Green to take strike. He eventually “took one for the team” and ran himself out enabling Bell to return to the crease and add further runs to the tally. Bell finished on a very stylish 39 not out.

The Alts had accumulated a pretty decent 128 runs.

Headstone’s batters got off to a sluggish but steady start, the pic of the Alts bowlers being Goodwin who took 4 wickets. Headstone kept chipping away at the target and were still near enough to the run rate as the match moved into the final phase. A few run outs ensued and the Headstone were left needing 9 off the last over with their final pair at the crease. Another run out finished the match off with Headstone on 123.

5 runs short of their target. Victory was ours

And so we all marched off to the Bowls Club to watch the England Sweden match, a glorious and fairly routine 2-0 victory. The highlights being the splendid homemade apple strudel!!
